The Motorcycles and Kit We Supply

We provide up to four Honda CRF 250Ls, which are ideal for your first trail riding experience. We ask you to arrive 9 to 9.15am. If you book two days, we visit a different area on the second day. We ride 80 to 100 miles and usually go to a cafe for lunch. The price is £240 for one day or £400 for two days, and includes road insurance * and any clothing you need. We provide enduro type clothing free of charge, so all you need to bring is a drink, spare socks, and card or a little cash for your lunch at a cafe. Our helmets are adventure style with visors and removable liners which are washed before each riding day, but if you prefer to wear your own road helmet, that is fine. Everywhere we go is open to the public. If you are a single rider, we will do our best to match you with riders who will progress at a similar rate. We can cater for mixed ability groups by splitting the route at certain parts of the day. If you would like one-to-one or an exclusive day for a group, please ask. If you are new to trail riding, please see our hints and tips page.

* To hire a motorcycle you need to hold a full or A2 motorcycle licence and be 25 or older. If you have 9 or more points or the following convictions, I am sorry but our insurance company will not provide cover:  CD, DD, DR, UT, MS50 or 3 or more other driving offences. If you want to ride one of our bikes but do not meet our insurance criteria, you could investigate short term insurance yourself for a day or two. Please ask us for the registration number of a bike. If you are 22, 23 or 24 we may be able to obtain insurance for you depending on your riding history, so please enquire.

You can book by email, landline phone 01686 430522, mobile phone or text 017849 760722, or by filling in the form on the contact page. The 250Ls are at home on tarmac or trail. Most of our rides are trail tours, but if you prefer to stay on tarmac, we are very happy to please ask.

We know that when you gather on the day, there may be a few nerves and a fair bit of anticipation and excitement if it is new for you. No charge is made for use of our protective clothing or accidental damage, except for a couple of exceptions. These include ignoring a direct request from a leader, not looking ahead and crashing as a consequence, and any riding behaviour which is causing danger to yourself, other riders or users of the roads or byways, i.e. farmers, walkers, cyclists and horse riders.

Please note that personal accident insurance is not provided. Colin and Marianne been ACU coaches in the past, but are not currently qualified.

Trail riders in North Wales

If you ride modern motocross or enduro bikes, our Honda trail bikes are not suitable for you. They are lower, heavier and have softer suspension than a competition bike. This makes them good for novices as they can be ridden slower and stay planted in ruts, but they cannot be ridden at speed over rough ground.

We are keen to make sure that you have an enjoyable experience with us. Road riders who have never been trail riding before are often surprised at how strenuous it is! If you have physical restrictions or a medical condition we are very happy to plan an appropriate route for you, but we do need to know in advance. Likewise, if you are new to motorcycling, have not ridden for many years or ride a classic British bike, please let us know when you book.

Most green roads have some degree of technicality and some riders quickly realise that riding on slippery and rough surfaces is not for them. If this is the case we can usually split the group. Marianne then take the rider(s) separately on an easier route, including gravel if OK, or staying on tarmac if not. Our area is really scenic and has lots of minor tarmac lanes which not many people explore.

The easy rides are great for nervous riders to boost confidence - our bikes are A2 compliant. Also they are good for riders who have not ridden for many years or who are enjoying an active retirement. Most of our rides are full days, but we are pretty flexible and can do a shorter route on request, or we can spread the day out a bit more with a coffee break and then a late lunch rather than just the one meal break. Please ask.

Trail Rides Wales ask you to undertake:-

To arrive at the meeting place at 9.30am or the specified time. If you are later than half an hour and we have not received a phone call or text message to 07849 760722, we may start without you. Unfortunately [email protected] does not work on the phone, but can be used if we are riding from our house, as we usually do. If we have left, contact us and someone will come back to fetch you.

Please do not say you are experienced unless you are! Road riding experience is irrelevant. Experience needs to be trail riding, trials or enduro school, and it is important you are familiar with riding in a standing position.

Please inform us if there is a change in the number or experience of the people after the original booking.

We expect you to treat our motorcycles and personnel with respect. You must not be affected by alcohol or drugs (prescription or recreational) – please remember this the night before!

Please note that it is your responsibility to satisfy yourself that the bike is safe to ride during the day, e.g. if it develops a fault or receives accidental damage. If in doubt, ask Colin or Marianne to check the bike over.

Please stay on the track. Riding on land beside the track is illegal, and discourteous to the landowner.

Please do not wheelie, do stoppies, or “roost”. Roosting is spinning the back wheel, kicking up gravel and dirt, and is potentially dangerous if the person behind has uncovered eyes. If riding on grass, please accelerate and brake gently. Once torn up, grass takes a long time to recover. Although it is a public route, the grass is the farmer’s livelihood, and it is discourteous to cause damage unnecessarily.

Riders must be considerate of the countryside and other users. We do not want one of our group to cause injury to a walker, cyclist, horse rider or damage and/or injury to another vehicle user. Please take care when passing livestock, particularly in spring when lambing is taking place.
